Allegheny College
Vukovich Center for Communication Arts

Massaro was hired by Allegheny College to construct the new home for the theater arts department named the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts.

The Vukovich Center for Communication Arts is home to the theater arts department and features:
A 225 seat theater and theater support spaces, including dressing rooms, prop rooms, a lighting booth, scene shop and costume shop
An extensive outdoor patio/courtyard area
First floor television studio and control room
Media studies room with tiered seating
A smaller theater for mixed usage including offices and classrooms
Third floor office space for the theater department
A "Green Roof" consisting of planting beds, a walk around boardwalk made of Ipe Brazilian hardwood, benches and a seating area over looking the student union
A large outdoor patio for student and theater related functions
A staggered brick facade with zinc standing seam siding panels

Some unique challenges included installation and purchasing of theater and media equipment and construction of a tap pit with a flatness tolerance. Because of the exposed interiors, the aesthetics of the MEP systems were given careful consideration. Massaro also provided extensive waterproofing systems for the "Green Roof" to ensure all rooms, skylights and courtyards are encased in a water tight membrane. Construction occurred on a busy college campus so safety and logistics were carefully coordinated to ensure the safety of the students and faculty.
