The One on Centre, The Center of Attention
August 8, 2018
– Joseph A. Massaro, Jr.
When we were kids, our dad often said, “Get up, pack your lunch and go to work.” It was one of those things parents say that has little meaning as a kid. As we grow older, most will agree, the things our parents said begin to make more sense.
My dad’s quote could not ring more true for the One on Centre project. We can take pride in knowing we constructed the largest apartment building in the City of Pittsburgh, which stands at 17 stories high and is 580,000 square feet. We began to erect steel in April of 2017, and in 15 months we put in place $67 million of contractual work — that is incredible!
Our team consisted of Jim Kephart, Mike Clements, Ryan Cole, Jim Thompson, Sean Fischer, Jeff Fleming, Brian Baumeister, Todd Chester, Frank Pietro, and a slew of others. We overcame a 40-day delay early in the project for utility relocation, a cold snap in the first two weeks of January, the wettest February in Pittsburgh in 40 years, and a major international delivery problem with casework and hundreds of cabinets.
It was hard and our team was under constant pressure, but we persevered. We worked as one team with our subcontractors, which included Patrinos, SSM, WG Tomko, Marsula Electric, Kalkreuth Roofing, Modany Falcone, HB Reynolds, Schindler, Sippel Steel, Century Steel Erectors, Dan Taylor, Tom Brown, Hoff Enterprises, Massaro Industries, Mongiovi and Son and many others. While we didn’t always agree, we all came through as a united front in the end.
Together, we did something many thought wasn’t possible. I couldn’t be more proud of our Massaro team, and our finished product. Most importantly, we were able to live out the lesson my dad preached so many years ago. We “got up, packed our lunch and went to work”. The impossible became possible and the experiences we gained throughout this project are some we will remember for the rest of our lives.
Thank you and congratulations again to everyone involved with this incredible building and thank you to all of the Massaro employees who work hard every day to make our company so special.
